On October 14th 1899 the Boers (Dutch) attempted to
siege Kimberly from the British. The British army
used automatic weapons against the Boers,
thus increasing the ratio to win. The battle
lasted 123 days. 21 civilians and 134 armed
defenders died. It later became know as the City
of Diamonds due to its mines of diamonds.

Boers on the Tugula River in Northern Natal in the Battle of Spion Kop. There were
20,000 British troops against 8,000 Boers. The Boers won
due to incompetence of the British leaders. 1,500 British
troops died. The Boers lost 335 men.

these camp. 25,000 women and children died from
dysentery, measles, and enteric fever. 45 tented camps
were built. There was inadequate medical care and food
